Memorial Arch

Memorial Arch

2008-11-20

Head far enough south on 5th Avenue and you find your way interrupted by the Memorial Arch in Washington Square Park. There was a time when you could drive through the arch and through the park, but when plans were put in place by Robert Moses to extend 5th Avenue all the way through the park, one of my urban hero's Jane Jacobs came to the rescue. She worked tirelessly to close the park entirely to auto traffic which it remains today.

(Update: June, 2010) Dear Reader, Life has gotten to be very very busy lately (in a good way) so to retain quality, I have decided to cut back to just a few images a week until September. Meanwhile, I will continue to post on iPhoneography NYC.
