New York City through the viewfinder of Devyn Caldwell

"People often stare at me when I am taking photographs. I don't care really much, because they cannot see what I do. I always feel as though the shot I am taking is my own small secret, or an inside joke. Well, here is where some of my small secrets become public, and a little bit less inside."

Colophon

From my earliest years growing up on the Central Valley of California, my heart has always longed for Manhattan. In 2007, after a 20-year journey via progressively bigger cities (Portland, Seattle, and Chicago), I finally came to live, where my heart always was... Manhattan. I currently reside in a tiny rent stabilized studio in the West Village.

It is through the chaos of the city that I find inspiration, pointing my camera at the very things everybody else can see, but don’t notice. I am drawn to lights, pretty colors, and shiny things. You will find this to be a theme through my work. I am also inspired by the diversity of New York City store fronts.

Before coming to New York, I lived in, and was inspired by the Chicago Loop, and began my first photoblog Looper in 2005. Followed by a second (and now defunct) version in 2006.

Equipment and Software

Photographers have long used mechanical equipment to alter their images, I have no shame in using technology to do the same in the digital realm. I don't generally do much in the way of altering images outside of tweaking the white balance or color a bit. To manage and tweak my images, I rely primarily upon Adobe Lighroom 2.3 and occasionally Photoshop Elements 4.0 (Mac). I shoot my images in RAW, using Manual Mode whenever possible. Occasionally, I will post a shot from my iPhone.
